Just Do The Next Thing

Many days I am overwhelmed.  I always have a list of things I need to do.  Some I really need to do...others are things I want to do or accomplish...some are things that I "self-obligate" myself into.  Often I create mountains that appear impossible to conquer.  But every mountain is climbed one step at a time.

For years I struggled with the simple task of laundry.  Throwing it into the washer was fast and easy.  Throwing it into the dryer was fast and easy.  Carrying it upstairs...accomplish-able.  But folding it and putting it away? required super hero power I would be telling my friend Niki how I was so behind in housework...and she'd say "oh you have Mt. Foldmore in the living room again?"  As the boys grew older I was needing to teach them to help...and my fairy godmother Pinterest came to my rescue! I found there was fix!  I bought some plastic utility shelving, new laundry baskets....and I started folding the laundry straight from the dryer and putting it into its owners basket!  Now everyone carries up their own laundry and puts it away. And I  can now dry the next load!  I had to learn to "do the next thing"!

I was sharing with another mom the other day that recently I had been keeping myself sane by focusing on what I did get done instead of what I did not...and sometimes I even made a To Done list instead of a To Do list.  She so sweetly reminded me that that is okay.  She said remember Elizabeth Elliot would say "Just do the next thing". I had forgotten that!! Later I "googled"...I needed that advice again!  And so I am sharing with you that poem that Elizabeth Elliot shared with us years ago.

From an old English parsonage down by the sea
There came in the twilight a message to me;
Its quaint Saxon legend, deeply engraven,
Hath, it seems to me, teaching from Heaven.
And on through the doors the quiet words ring
Like a low inspiration: “DO THE NEXT THING.”
Many a questioning, many a fear,
Many a doubt, hath its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from Heaven,
Time, opportunity, and guidance are given.
Fear not tomorrows, child of the King,
Trust them with Jesus, do the next thing
Do it immediately, do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing His hand
Who placed it before thee with earnest command.
Stayed on Omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing,
Leave all results, do the next thing.
Looking for Jesus, ever serener,
Working or suffering, be thy demeanor;
In His dear presence, the rest of His calm,
The light of His countenance be thy psalm,
Strong in His faithfulness, praise and sing.
Then, as He beckons thee, do the next thing.

Dear friend, find some rest today.  And just worry about doing the next thing.  And maybe it is a cup of coffee. Breathe!

Treasures in my yard

I had a friend pass on to the next life this week.  And of course I am reminded to treasure every day. This afternoon I was out enjoying my yard and decided to share it:

Flowers that were on clearance and pitiful a couple of weeks ago.
Look at this guy...I have heard that the ugliest caterpillars make the prettiest moths--I hope so! He is on my lovely Kentucky Coffee Tree

My guys and their friends have climbed and made forts in these trees for years.

My first jalapeno pepper--I am sure I will eat it by Monday!!

Tomatoes happening!

This apple tree is full--but look at the leaves!  I haven't noticed red and yellow spots on the leaves before.  My other apple trees have beautiful leaves but no fruit.

...sigh... my small garden...this year I felt this was all I could tend. Even so if it is like in years past I will probably still be able to can beans from it and be able to share too!

I hope you are having a lovely summer and taking time to enjoy it!

The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today

Looking out my window--today was slightly bleak here in Kentucky...this morning it spit snow and was just a cold breezy day.

I am thinking--that I didn't get everything accomplished that I had on my mind this morning...but I visited an old friend, text a couple distant friends, spent some time with my family just hanging out...so laundry will get caught up... but today's important moments were captured.

I am thinking--that I need more days like today :-)
One of my favorite things--today is TIME.

I am creating--a trial warp on my Ashford Knitters
Loom---many of the yarns are bits left from past projects.

I am reading--this is the current read-a-loud that I am reading to the boys
I am wearing--a dark green olive turtle neck and plaid skirt that I got for my birthday

I am hoping--that I can come up with a great dish to take to a potluck on Sunday~~I never know what to take to those...sigh...

I am learning--to control the laundry monster!

In my kitchen--I made a breakfast casserole!

My niece Hannah's Etsy shop--she is 16!!what a young lady!!

Quote of the day--try to create a home you would want to live in
[not sure where I heard it--but it is my goal]

Moment of my day--Today I visited a dear friend at her new weaving studio!!  Instantly I felt right at home.  It brought back lots of warm memories of days I sat in her yarn shop learning to knit and weave!  while making a friend that I kept even after the shop closed!

Closing notes--always take a picture...I found this picture today from February 2006-  my husbands grandmother holding Nate's hand.  Granny Eula is gone...but I have this lovely picture to share with Nate!

Peace

I came across this picture and screen shot it:

I am not even sure what it was attached to or about but it struck a chord in my heart.  I have had to think over this.  Lately I seem to be pondering forgiveness, resolution, and trying to let people know they matter.

** forgiveness-- seems to sweetest when served sooner rather than later
--the hardest person for me to forgive is myself.  I find after I allow myself to forgive someone I feel the release of the prison of hurt and bitterness from offender but I can't always free my self from the guilt of my part of the offense even just for initial investment of conflict.

*Resolution--sometimes resolution takes time. Sometimes it just can never happen.  I have learned from experience that when both parties can agree the only solution is to start from where you are now.  The past can't be fixed or rebuilt sqq sometimes you just have to start from this moment on.  Agree to build from here.  Don't reach into the past and try to build with damaged materials.

Peace cannot happen on broken bridge --forgive those.  Move on. Find a strong place to build.

Oh What A Read!

I broke down and finally purchased an ebook!  Several times I had picked this book up carried it through the book store and then changed my mind.  But finally the other night I had the urge to read it again.  So I bought it and downloaded it!

How ironic!

A book about tidying!  And I never have to put it away!  It is a quick and an inspiring read!  Am I where I want to be in my organization? No.  But I have direction.  I am conscientiously tidying, allowing myself to discard and donate things that are not bringing me joy.  I am seeing my closets as awake time centers awake time and not others hiding places.
Clutter not only is a thief of real estate in our homes--but of peace too.  Tomorrow my big plans is to begin celebrating my choice of letting go by delivering donations to some local thrift stores.

Diaper Duty

So I joined the 40 Bags in 40 Days challenge again this year.  Ann Marie from white House Black Shutters has been hosting this challenge for 5 years.  Last year I completed it and this year that is my goal too.  Whether you do five bags, forty or a hundred you are a winner because you free yourself from more clutter!

Today is my second day...I  was cleaning a shelf in the closet of our master bath...and I found this diaper. I wanted to hide it.  Put it somewhere special.  Because every mom realizes that those size 2 diapers have their own story.  Size 2 diaper is when you realize that guests arrive not bearing baby gifts anymore.  Size 2 actually cost more!  And size 2 is when you are so on your own financially too.  Preemie, newborn and size one are the cutie diapers.  Guests will even offer to change the dirty one because they are so sweet....but size 2?  Oh no they be catching the peas, green beans and prune juice!

Size two screamed because you were out of sight while you took a quick potty break of your own. Size 2 finally had a bowel movement when you got a moment to bathe them.  Size 2 is when you want to sleep through the night! **what a wish!** And you discover the need for size 2 when you have more week than paycheck!

And some of us celebrated picking up the first pack of size 2 along with a pregnancy test.  Don't judge.

I held the little diaper for a moment.  Then I pitched it. Hiding it. Holding it.  Would not put another little baby in my arms.  But yeah I took the picture and I shared it with you.  It is a memory.  And next time a little mommy lets me hold her little size 2 treasure.  I will let her have a moment to breathe, to rest, and maybe I will even pick up a package of those size 2 diapers!

**disclaimer:  my last size 2 will be 7 in April!!There  are many wonderful times after that size 2 diaper but enjoy it too!!

Empathy vs. Sympathy

This is me:
A few months ago...but something about it seems to capture what I think people see when they look at me.  This picture was taken at a local fiber arts studio.  The owner is a dear friend of mine and she took this with her cell phone.  Just how she saw me that day and thought I needed a picture :-)

I often wonder how I am perceived.  I openly share about my medical condition.  Not for sympathy but a true desire that I can encourage someone to believe that there is hope.  And to share information that may be passed to someone that can benefit from my experiences.

When I talk to people also suffering Multiple Sclerosis  or something similar I try to share and encourage from where they are.  Not to be disheartened or jealous if they are doing better than I am.  And not to push them into defeat or make them feel that I think they are just willingly succumbing.

I share because I am all about spreading hope.  Restoring belief. Raising faith.  And most of all letting them feel me walking beside them--not over them, not behind them, not in front of them.

I don't think that I "pull the sick card"....But not always do people see my limitations.  So sometimes I do have to say..."give me an extra moment my _____ doesn't work like everyone else".

I don't for sympathy but so that I can let people see from  where I am.

Sympathy:  Acknowledging another person's emotional hardships and providing comfort and assurance.

Empathy:   Understanding what others are feeling because you have experienced it yourself or can put yourself in their shoes.

Sharing this song that spoke to my heart even before I become ill.

I remember a few years ago a friend of mine went through two still born births back to back. One day while just quietly listening to her share the story again while she was still sorting the details in her heart she told me.  "Back when you lost babies I always felt sad for you but now I know that pain."  That is empathy...even if you don't know the struggle--reaching for the place to know the feeling.  I don't want or need sympathy.  But I always need people to see the view from my shoes.  And I sincerely try to look at others circumstances from where they are.

4th Night of Hanukkah

So I did not get our Third Night of Hanukkah posted The Night of Peace.

For us it was a night of Peace.  We did a favor for another family and afterward we had to do some shopping.  My boys H.A.T.E. shopping. But we got through it.

Tonight was the Fourth Night of the Festival of Lights. The Night of JOY.  And today has been such a day of Joy!  The last day of school before Christmas break!!  The activity last night to close the Day of Joy was to attend a church service.

For us the season is about Jesus.  And He is the beginning of JOY
